Reading signs of Dyslexia in a 5 year old child is both simple and complex. You need the right knowledge of what is actually happening in a Dyslexic child’s mind and understanding to be able to identify that they are Dyslexic. Most Dyslexic children may invert and reverse the letters in their effort to learn to read and write.

Children misspell the alphabet because they are seeing the repeated patterns for different letters, b/d, u/n. A misspell or incorrect formation of a letter is an effort to separate unique letters in their writing so they can actually read each letter clearly. Key is understanding inverted letter reading and understanding examples of inverted text

What we are saying in this article is children know that the letters turn.  They know a b and d look the same to them but are being told they are different and so often do not communicate this to their adult guardians. A smart child may write letters differently, make their b squared or have an extra line or loop to help them, but since it does not match the teachers expectation they are often disciplined or labeled by teachers who don’t know how to recognize Dyslexia in children.

Recognizing Signs of Dyslexia in a 5 Year Old

Take note of how the child is learning and teaching themselves how to write. Are they changing the letter to look different than one another. There is the linear alphabetical system where there is only 26 variations of lower case and 26 variations of upper case letters to the english alphabet. Then, there is the Dyslexics alphabetical references.

Is the five year old staring at the letters trying to figure out which way is the top of the letter. This may be an indication that the child is Dyslexic. If the 5 year old child is drawing the letter p as a b then they are showing evidence of having Dyslexia.

The Dyslexic child will see variations of each of the 26 letters at least 3 times the amount of the 26 letters. Some Dyslexic children will only see two variations of each of the alphabetical letters but still be able to read for the most part, perhaps letters only flip up and down but not reverse. Some Dyslexic 5 year olds will see 4 variations including the example of each letter that is written on the black board or teaching materials.

Recognizing Signs of Dyslexia in a five year old takes noticing how they are writing what they are seeing. S ome Dyslexic children will write upside down e’s. This is not an issue to spelling mistakes that are common with Dyslexics but it is a sign that the child is Dyslexic.

1. Use Color Therapy Transparent Overlays
2. Use Color Therapy Glasses

If you are seeing that the child is writing a 3 instead of a capital E, then you will also be able to tell that the Dyslexia of the child’s perception is active. It is important not to discipline the child in any way, but only to observe how the real perspective of the child is, seeing and viewing things on their own.

Variations of letters are part of the learning process of the Dyslexic five year old learning to write. It is important that the child is able to write the upside down letters and write out the learning experience for themselves to be able to improve their Dyslexia.

A backwards r, or a backwards d are variations of the english alphabet as the Dyslexic child reads and see’s them. The only difference between the backwards r and the backwards d when written or read is that d become other letters in the same alphabet and r remains a constantly unique letter within the alphabet.

Not Limiting the Child’s Mistakes during Learning

It is important to encourage the exploration of the english alphabet in all the differences of which the alphabet can be read. You cannot recognize a Dyslexic student or a Dyslexic child when you are limiting their mistakes and not allowing them to write. The Dyslexic student needs to be able to write out the differences of what they are seeing.

A five year old watching the sloppy writing of an adult or teacher may read w instead of m. Recognizing signs of dyslexia in a 5 year old also involve the b, d, p, and q.

The writing style of the font print of the alphabet sheet may be failing the child from learning that w and m are two different letters and uniquely different. If the child is taught the unique letter characteristics of m with rounded top, and the variation of w with straight lined accuracy on the bottom of the w’s letter you will enable the five year old Dyslexic child a better opportunity.

Correcting the work too soon, interferes with understanding the Child’s Dyslexia

Too many teachers correct the classroom of students too quickly and try not to have anyone in the classroom making mistakes. Mistakes in writing is a certain way to be able to learn about how the child is seeing. The Educators need to learn that how the child is perceiving things is far more important than having a correct grade so everyone can evenly get a star for their hour long classroom study.

We need the data from the initial writing of students to be able to see earlier signs of which way and which type of Dyslexia that the five year old child has.

Mistakes are how we learn and we need to be able to recognize how we learn. If a child is writing letters in reverse than that is a great sign that they are horizontally Dyslexic rather than vertically Dyslexic. If they are writing d’s instead of p’s then they are likely vertically Dyslexic but maybe not as much horizontally Dyslexic.

Teachers need to have even more patience while teaching the writing and reading process with five year old children. Many times a five year old child will give a lot of signals that they are Dyslexic and it will go unnoticed because everyone is correcting their work to earn a gold star rather than actually seeing how each student is writing.

Pressures during learning to read and write are so unnecessary in the learning process. Teachers are far better off to allow the children to write the alphabet worksheets as they do without correcting their work as they go.  This way it will be far better to diagnose the type of Dyslexia that the child has or what the perceptions of the child actually are.

Teachers can watch for signs of Dyslexia in a 5 year old child if they understand the differences in Dyslexic symbols and linear letters. If the child is consistently drawing things upside down that may also be a sign.

You can tell signs of Dyslexia in a 5 year old if you are able to give them the space of writing what they are seeing. At first what the child see’s is what they will learn to read like. We need to make a goal to be able to learn how the child see’s then learn to analyse how the Dyslexic reads.

The letter combinations that are difficult will always make sense normally if they are turned around or inverted. Non-Linear thinking teachers may have a difficulty understanding that a w could look identical to an m. The child does not need to rotate the letter on the page physically to be able to see the rotation on the page. The child is creative enough to recognize the different rotation of the letter as they view it on the page.

Other signs of dyslexia in a 5 year old include the following letters: An h could look like an n, if the fairy tale book has a weakly connected top of the h. Many children will confuse letters due to fonts in children’s books. A backwards f, is still an f. A weakly connected h, is an n.

Y and g are also needing to be unique to one another during the writing process. If the letters are all equally margined in a way that there are only slight differences, then your materials that you are giving the child is hurting their chances of being able to recognize the alphabetical letters. Thus, you would be hurting the child’s chances to read.

The letter k and Capital R are important not to confuse. This is when their is typically a loop given to the letter K that could be interpretated as an R. Even though the R and the K are more unique than the p, b, and d (and sometimes q). The wrong font could be an indicator that the R is a K to the child reading.

The lower case u, and the lower case n. It is ultra important to recognize that these two alphabetical letters are identical in many of the writing styles and font styles in the english alphabet. Uaucy, instead of nancy is a common reading of Dyslexia for the word. Most teachers will teach or treat the child who reads Uaucy a bit differently thinking that it is a phonetic issue that the child is having. The child is reading U, instead of N.  Dyslexia does not have to be a mystery if rotation is understood and thought about by the Linear teacher or Linear Educator.

What to do as Adult Dyslexics without their original writing samples

If you as a parent were not keen to finding signs of Dyslexia in a 5 year old early on, you can still achieve success by paying attention now. Original samples are helpful but paying attention to inverted symbols now can also lead to success.

An adult Dyslexic who does not have their own reading or writing records as they learned will have to adopt the font of what they are reading to discover their Dyslexic tendencies. Some fonts will extend their own difficult equations while reading while other fonts will seem to not have as difficult equations to solve while reading. Pick the font that is offers the most distinct letters where each alphabetical letter looks most different from one another even when turned or flipped.

Reading in different fonts will tell the adult Dyslexic if they are horizontally inclined or vertically inclined. Many solutions are coming to The signs of dyslexia in a 5 year old are usually in the writing samples.
